  • What is a herniated disc?

    • Disc herniation is one of the most common reasons for back pain, and it often results in severe, debilitating pain. The intervertebral discs have an inner layer (nucleus pulposus) and an outer layer (annular fibrosis). When the outer layer deteriorates or becomes weak, the nucleus material pushes outward. This protrusion of the jelly-like material irritates or impinges spinal nerves, which causes extreme pain.

  • What is the purpose of a percutaneous discectomy?

    • Patients with long-standing pain related to a herniated disc can get relief with a percutaneous discectomy. This procedure shrinks or removes the material surrounding the herniated disc to reduce inflammation and back pain. Once the material is removed, the patient’s pain resolves due to less pressure and no nerve irritation.

  • What happens before the percutaneous discectomy?

    • Before the procedure, you should discuss all your medications with the doctor. Any blood-thinning agents will have to be stopped for several days before the discectomy. When you arrive for the procedure, a nurse will go over the risks and benefits and have you sign a consent form. In addition, an IV is placed in your arm so you can receive a sedative and other medications during the procedure.

  • How is the percutaneous discectomy performed?

    • The patient is placed face down on a special table, and the back is cleansed with an antiseptic solution. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area. Once numb, a needle with a probe is inserted into the affected disc, using x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy). Once in position, the needle probe is heated or radiofrequency energy is used to remove the disc material. Once all material is removed, the needle is removed, and a bandage is applied. The percutaneous discectomy takes around 30 minutes to perform.

  • What can I expect after the procedure?

    • You will be monitored after the percutaneous discectomy for approximately 30 minutes. Once you are stable, you need someone to drive you home. The injection site is usually tender for around 24 hours, so we recommend the use of an ice pack for short intervals to alleviate the discomfort. Most patients are permitted to return to week within 5-7 days.
