The bone ends are surrounded by a joint capsule, which is filled with synovial fluid. With certain types of arthritis and injury to the joint, the cartilage is damaged, and/or there is a depletion of synovial fluid.

  • What is the purpose of a corticosteroid joint injection?

    • The corticosteroid medication injected into the joint will decrease the inflammation and/or swelling of the joint space tissue. Reduction of inflammation reduces pain, stiffness, and other symptoms of the joint.

  • Are joint injections painful?

    • The procedure is an outpatient injection, which involves inserting a needle into the joint. Therefore, there is some pain associated with a joint injection. However, the doctor will first use a very small needle to numb the skin and deeper tissues before inserting the injection needle. Most patients report very little pain.

  • How are joint injections performed?

    • The Los Angeles pain management doctor will first assess your joint and determine the exact area to inject. Shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers are usually injected with the patient in a sitting position, whereas hips, ankles, and toes are injected with the patient lying down.

      The skin is first cleansed with an antiseptic agent, and then the local anesthetic is used. The needle is positioned into the joint, using x-ray guidance to assure correct placement. Once the medication is instilled into the joint, the needle is removed, and a bandage is applied.

  • What happens following the joint injection?

    • After the injection, you may notice that your pain is lessened or eliminated, mainly due to the local anesthetic. However, the pain may return along with some soreness at the injection site, but this only lasts for a few hours. You will start to notice improvement after 2-5 days.

      You will need to have someone drive you home following certain injections. Unless there are complications, you are permitted to return to work the following day.

  • What are the side effects and complications associated with joint injections?

    • The joint injection procedure is generally safe. However, as with any minimally invasive procedure, there are a few rare risks and complications.

      These include infection, bleeding, and worsening pain. In addition, side effects to corticosteroids include weight gain, elevated blood sugar, and water retention, but these are temporary.
