When you repeat movements over and over, you may get repetitive strain injuries. This is an injury which results from overusing your body in repetitive movements such as using a computer, writing regularly, or conducting any other prolonged, repetitive and forceful movement.

Poor posture, poor technique, and overuse can cause injuries which is why you must avoid repetitive movements. Not sleeping well, not exercising, not taking breaks, working on a computer for more than two hours, being sedentary, or having poor posture can all lead to this.

If you do not warm up your muscles, even muscles in your hand or wrist, and instead repeat the same motion over and over, it will cause damage to your body.

You should also avoid heavy lifting. Improper lifting of heavy items is exactly what causes so much back pain. It is best to develop proper lifting habits now if you must lift, so that you reduce your risk of injury later. When you lift heavy items, you should never bend at your waist or use your lower back. You want to bend at your knees and lift with your legs.

Even if you are merely placing items on a shelf or moving small things around on multiple shelves, you want to avoid heavy lifting. If you must lift or move heavy things you should use a cart or a dolly or avoid injury. This is especially true if you already suffer from a back injury, back pain, or something like arthritis. Heavy lifting and repetitive movements will only hurt you.

While heavy lifting and repetitive movements ought to be avoided there is still a lot of good that can come from certain movements when treating back pain. Non-repetitive movement but movement nonetheless that slightly works the muscles surrounding the source of your pain can help to stretch it out and ease muscle tension. Regular daily movement such as walking around your house or getting up from your desk every hour to stretch your legs and walk around can help to alleviate muscle loss associated with laying in bed and can stretch the area that hurts and build up the supporting muscles.
