    • To relieve painful conditions, we use a number of therapeutic minimally invasive procedures. These techniques are performed using x-ray guidance (imaging fluoroscopy) to assure patient safety and correct needle placement.

      Epidural steroid injections - Usually given in a series, these injections involve the delivery of a steroidal agent, with or without an anesthetic, into the epidural space, near the spinal cord and nerves.

      Nerve root blocks - These injections are used to deliver powerful medications onto or near nerves. For maximum benefit, you may need 2-3 nerve root blocks.

      Facet joint injections - With this procedure, the doctor injects steroids and/or a local anesthetic into the tiny facet joints along the spine.

      Radiofrequency denervation - To destroy a portion of the nerves, the doctor uses a special needle with an electrode tip, which heats up to coagulate nerves. Other terms for this procedure are rhizotomy, ablation, and neuroablation. This procedure can offer pain relief for up to 12 months.

      Joint injections - This involves the instillation of hyaluronic acid (replace lost fluid) or a corticosteroid (reduce inflammation) directly into the joint space.

      Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty - Both of these procedures are used to alleviate the pain associated with vertebral compression fracture. Spinal disc decompression – With this procedure, a special table is used to apply distraction force to decompress one or more intervertebral discs.

      Intradiscal injections - A solution can be injected directly into the intervertebral disc to replace lost fluid or relieve inflammation.

    • The diagnostic procedures we perform are essential for assisting orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons to make critical surgical decisions for patients with spine disorders. All of our procedures are performed using image-guidance (x-ray technology) to assure accuracy and patient safety. Some of the diagnostic procedures we perform include:

      Myelograms - A myleogram is a diagnostic x-ray performed to detect abnormalities of the spine and associated structures. Radio-opaque dye is injected into the spinal canal and x-rays are taken to show the outlined spinal canal.

      Discograms - A discogram is a test used to diagnose the source of a patient’s back pain. The doctor inserts a small needle into the center of the disc and then injects radioactive dye. This allows the doctor to see the sides of the outer covering of the disc on a monitor and assess for damage. The pain associated with the injection alerts the doctor if or not the disc is the cause of the back pain.

  • Effectiveness of Interventional Pain Management Techniques

    • The effectiveness of the various interventional pain management procedures is well-documented by clinical studies. In a detailed review of many clinical studies, researchers determined that facet joint nerve blocks were useful for diagnosing facet joint pain. In addition, there was moderate evidence to support the effectiveness of lumbar and cervical medial branch blocks and neurotomy. Epidural steroid injections were found to be excellent for both short- and long-term pain relief, as was sacroiliac intraarticular injections.
