    • This condition occurs most often in people 40 to 60 years of age, and tends to respond to resting the feet. Athletes with plantar fasciitis are often reluctant to rest the feet for long periods of time, but chronic pain can seriously interfere with usual activities.

  • What is the cause of plantar fasciitis?

    • The constant overload and trauma of the foot during weight-bearing activities contributes to plantar fasciitis. There is an association with this condition and increasing age, as well as inflammatory changes within the plantar fascia. The fascia loses elasticity with age, which causes a decrease in shock-absorbing ability. With persistent inflammation to the heel region, a spur may form.

  • What are the treatment options for plantar fasciitis?

    • Orthopedic shoes - Some people benefit from use of orthopedic shoes, which support the arch and offer cushion for the heel. Orthotic shoe inserts and heel cups help with the pain, also.

      Medications - The drug of choice for plantar fasciitis is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent, such as naproxen or ketoprofen. For severe pain, stronger analgesics are ordered short-term.

      Night splints - The patient can wear a splint during sleep to stretch the calf and arch of the foot. This splint holds the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia in a lengthened position.

      Physical therapy - This rehabilitation program was found to have an 83% success rate for patients with plantar fasciitis in a clinical study. The therapist works with the patient several times each week for a month or two.

      Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ECSW) - This is the use of sound waves directed at the heel and plantar fascia. This treatment is reserved for chronic plantar fasciitis that is nonresponsive to other treatments. ECSW was found to have an efficacy rate of 70-90% in many studies.

      Corticosteroid injections - The doctor uses these to decrease swelling of the plantar fascia. In a 2012 study, researchers found that injection of corticosteroids were extremely effective for treating the pain associated with this condition.

      Regenerative Medicine Injections - Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy can be very beneficial for plantar fasciitis. Another option is stem cell injections with either bone marrow or amniotic derived treatments.
